COPMeV observes 3rd foundation day

Imphal, August 11 2026: The Committee on Protection of Meetei Victims (COPMeV), Moreh, observed its third foundation day at the Akampat Relief Camp today.

Video footage and a compilation of photographs depicting the burnt Meetei houses at Moreh, IDPs taking refuge at an Assam Rifles camp at the border town, IDPs having meals on leaves, and their lives in relief camps were screened during the observance.

The visuals highlighted the ordeal and hardships endured by the IDPs for more than three years.

Addressing the function as chief guest, Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) convenor YK Dhiren said the Government should take responsibility for the thousands of people who have been forced to live like refugees in their own State.

The Government has so far been unable to find a solution to the crisis plaguing Manipur, he said.

Dhiren added that the Government could resolve the crisis within a short period if it intends to.

COPMeV chairman L Inaocha said they have not seen any sincere effort to resettle the IDPs, who have been languishing in relief camps, at their native villages.

He questioned whether the Government wants the IDPs to spend the rest of their lives living like refugees in relief camps.

He, meanwhile, urged the Government to refrain from resuming border trade between India and Myanmar at Moreh until the IDPs from the border town are resettled at their homes.

COPMeV vice-president Irom Rajendra said they had been urging the Government since the Congress regime to set up an IRB battalion at Moreh in view of the constant security threats from Kuki militants and their associates.

He also claimed that the Government led by Chief Minister Y Khemchand has been indifferent to the plight and concerns of the IDPs.

Representatives of other IDP bodies also attended the programme and shared accounts of how Meeteis were targeted and forced to flee their homes in places including Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Torbung etc .
