Cop dies, two hurt during attack on Meetei village

Imphal, September 13 2023:
As armed Kukis fired several rounds at Phubala Maning in Bishnupur district early Wednesday morning, a sub-inspector of Manipur Police got killed while two others left injured after the village volunteers guarding the nearby Meetei village retaliated fiercely.
The deceased SI has been identified as Onkhomang Haokip (35) s/o (L) Jampao Haokip of Molcham village, Kangpokpi, presently residing at Churachandpur District Headquarters.
According to a police report, armed Kukis started firing several round and hurled bombs from Chingphei village located close to Phubala Maning in Bishnupur district early Wednesday morning.
The state forces and village volunteers guarding the village retaliated against the attack and the gunfight lasted for around half-an-hour.
Around noon, the armed Kukis launched another attack which state forces and village volunteers retaliated leading to SI Onkhomang Haokip and two others struck by the bullets.
All three were taken to Churachandpur District Hospital where Onkhomang succumbed to injuries.
With regard to the incident, Police Control Room issued a press release condemning the dastardly attack wherein SI Onkhomang was martyred.
The release further informed that his last rites will be held at Churachandpur on Thursday.
According to news agencies the police sub-inspector on duty at Chingphei bunker No 1 .
Got hit on the head between 1 pm and 1.30 pm.
The attack comes a day after three Kuki people were gunned down by unidentified men in Kangpokpi district on Tuesday morning.
On September 8, another three people were killed and over 50 injured at Pallel in Tengnoupal district.
Meanwhile, Kukis armed with sophisticated weapons continued attacking a Meetei village in Phubala Maning Upper High Canal after midnight on Tuesday.
Personnel of 2MR, VDF and village volunteers guarding the Meetei village and the paddy fields nearby also returned fire amid heaving shelling by the attackers.
As per locals, the armed Kukis have not stopped attacking the Meetei villages in the area since August 29.On the other hand, armed Kukis continued to attack the Meetei village in Koutruk area, Imphal West district early Wednesday morning.
The attack was retaliated by the village volunteers and the gunfight lasted for an hour.
However, there is no report of any injury in the Koutruk incident though armed men hurled at least ten bombs.
According to locals, the bomb attack triggered panic among the villagers.
Koutruk is one of the worst violence-hit areas in Imphal valley and has witnessed several exchanges of fire between the two warring groups since clashes broke out on May 3.Earlier this week, a 14-year-old girl was hit by a bullet that pierced through the wall of her residence at Koutruk.
