Moreh combed, 10 Myanmarese jailed at Sajiwa

Imphal, November 01 2023: Following the attack by Kuki militants on Tuesday in which SDPO Moreh Chingtham Anandkumar was shot dead, search operations were conducted in different parts of Moreh border town in Tengnoupal district on Wednesday during which 44 people were detained out of which 32 turned out to be of Myanmar origin.

Out of them, 10 Myanmarese nationals were brought to Imphal in a helicopter and kept at Foreigner Detention Centre, Sajiwa under The Foreigners Act, 1946 .

According to police sources, a commando team which had left Imphal on Tuesday after the attack by the Kuki militants in Moreh, reached the border town at around 2 am on Wednesday.

At Moreh, the team from Imphal along with Manipur Police commando, Manipur Rifles, India Reserve Battalion and special commandos already deployed in the border town conducted search operations from around 4 am at Morning Market Colony under Moreh police station.

During the operation, all the people in the area were individually verified and 44 of them were detained and handed over to Moreh police station for further verification.

During the verification process, 32 were identified as Myanmarese nationals with 10 of them airlifted to Imphal in a helicopter and detained at Foreigner Detention Centre, Sajiwa, while rest of the detainees are at Moreh police station.

Combined team of state forces technically secured Moreh town area on Wednesday by carrying out foot patrolling followed by conduct of wide spread search operations in villages surrounding the town later in the day.

There were no reports of any detention or arrest in the latter operations.

The security forces will continue search operations in Moreh to prevent any further attack as well as to arrest the culprits involved in killing of SDPO Moreh Ch Anand.

It may be mentioned that Manipur Police commando and special commando team in month of October had arrested several illegal Myanmarese nationals and handed them over to Moreh police station for further legal action.

According to agency reports, the search operation also had the involvement of troopers of the Assam Rifles and Border Security Force (BSF).

All the 44 persons reportedly belong to Kuki community with 32 stated to have "Myanmar origin" .

The search operation is as a part of the crackdown launched by the forces following the killing of SDPO Anandkumar.

Reacting to the operations in Moreh town of Manipur, BJP MLA RK Imo said: "Strictest of action needs to be initiated against any insurgent groups and individuals who are waging war against the general people and the security forces" .

The BJP leader added: "The sacrifice of our beloved police officers and the general public will not go in vain" .

"Let us all support our forces and ensure that the government catches all culprits and punish them very soon, and also prioritise to resettle our displaced people in Moreh very soon.

Let us also identify all the Illegal migrants in Moreh and take appropriate action as per law," he further said.
