Imphal, November 01 2023:
All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) has demanded the central government to declare Moreh and Behiang as special administrative zones, considering the fact that these areas are inhabited by people of different communities in addition to their economic importance.
In a statement released to the press, AMUCO stated that it has always stood against any threat to Manipur's history, integrity, unity and development since the organisation's inception.
Its unwavering stand is to give exact response to anyone challenging the territorial integrity of Manipur, statement affirmed.
The on-going conflict in Manipur is the result of the ruling government's crackdown on mass poppy cultivation in hill areas, the War on Drugs' mission and efforts to protect the reserved forest and protected forest areas, and wildlife sanctuaries.
AMUCO is an organisation which firmly believes in peaceful coexistence and protection of Manipur's integrity by all concerned.
Stating that the only solution to the prolonged conflict would be to sincerely uphold the core principle of democracy; AMUCO, however, lamented that the central government is yet to consider some of its demands.
The demands included disarmament and putting an end to the violence; providing assistance and helping the displaced people to return to their homes; adding a clause in Article 2 and 3 of the Constitution for protecting the integrity and unity of Manipur; immediate implementation of NRC; re-organisation of districts to prevent political units based on community lines; renaming of Kangpokpi district to its old name, Sa-dar Hills and reorganising Bishnupur district to alleviate suffering of smaller tribes inhabiting Churachandpur district such as Kom, Chiru, Aimol and Kabui; declaring Moreh and Behiang as special administrative zones; protection of community reserve forests; and lastly, putting an end to narco-trade and poppy cultivation, it conveyed.
AMUCO then informed that the Way Forward' campaign has been launched and will be organised at various places for mass awareness and discourse.
On Wednesday, the campaign was held at Irabot Memorial community hall, Irabot Park, Lamlai, Imphal East district, and attended by the locals.
