Locals of Khoirom Mathak Leikai under Yairipok police station in Thoubal dis-trict set ablaze a truckload of lungis' smuggled in from Myanmar on Sunday and re-leased the driver and two other occupants of the truck after advising them to refrain from smuggling activities.
Local source said that the lungis were packed in around 200 sacks and would be worth around Rs 1 crore.
The truck (MN07C 2564) was intercepted at Yairipok Khoirom on Sat-urday around 11.30 am while on its way from Kamjong to-wards Thoubal Keithel via the Yairipok Kasom Khullen road.
The locals kept the smuggled lungis overnight and burned them on Sunday around 9 am after a joint meeting of Meira Paibi and local club of several localities of Yairipok as well as representatives of local GP and ZP as the occupants of the truck could not identify the owner or the owner did not come forward to claim them.
One Md Riyaz Shah (27) son of Md Heshamuddin of Yairipok Heitroipokpi, who claimed to be the owner of the truck, was driving the truck.
The other two occupants are Thangjam Romen (49) son of late Th Tomba and Lon 'am Premjit alias Sharubi (37) son of late L Mangoljao both of Yairipok Kekru.
Mention may be made that there are reports of lungi-clad armed militants attacking Meetei villages in the foot-hill areas thereby deepening suspicion about infiltration of armed Kuki militants from across the border.
