Imphal, April 07 2024:
Maintaining that there is nothing against the interest of the state in the party's election manifesto, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president MLA K Meghachandra said that candidates of the Indian National Congress (INC) will win both seats of the state.
He also said that the party will raise complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) if the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state does not take up necessary actions against the violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhawan here on Sunday, Meghachandra regretted that BJP is trying to mislead the people by misinterpreting a promise mentioned in the election manifesto of Congress party.
The manifesto, which the party calls Nyay Patra, was published after thorough deliberation.
The promise about forming a reconciliation commission is to bring together the divided communities of the state and find solution satisfactory to all by removing the failed BJP government.
Making false propaganda out of the matter will not bring any benefit to BJP, he said, wryly suggesting that BJP IT Cell sets up an adult education centre so that they could understand the meaning of 'reconciliation commission' .
He also said that false propaganda of BJP has destroyed the country.
Regarding the question on opposition's stand on ST status for Meetei/Meitei, Meghachandra said that the question should be directed to the government since they are in power.
As for Congress, it was the opposition party that put its best efforts to move a private member resolution on ST status for Meetei in the state legislative assembly.
There is not a clearer stand on the matter.
Meghachandra also said that the high security zone Babupara area has turned into a parking slot for people visiting the CM's bungalow and quarters of BJP MLAs and ministers.
The party had filed a complaint to the CEO in this regard citing MCC violation.
Unless the CEO acts swiftly, the party will take the matter to the ECI, he added.
On the other hand, INC candidate for Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency, Prof Angomcha Bimol Akoijam said that propaganda is part of electoral politics but it is unfortunate to resort to false propaganda.
He asked if there is anything against the interest of the state in the election manifesto of Congress party.
The term 'reconciliation' mentioned in the manifesto is to resolve the crisis by bringing together the fractured communities of the state and bring about a new and united Manipur.
Prof Bimol expressed surprise that BJP has been nonchalantly misinterpreting administrative settlement as separate administration contrary to Congress' promise for a settlement satisfactory to the people of the state.
It is about a solution that is acceptable to all communities, he elaborated while stating that he cannot understand the logic behind the misinterpretation and false propaganda.
Speaking about the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement with Kuki militants, Prof Bimol con tended that there was only about 15 Kuki militant groups when the then Congress government signed the SoO agreement with the number almost doubling under the BJP government.
He also said that nobody should politicise genuine public issue but fight the election on the basis of truth and proper conducts.
