Bishnupur, February 13 2024:
Endorsing the counter economic blockade being enforced in the valley districts in denunciation of the declaration by Tengnoupal village volunteers that shopkeepers should not sell essential commodities to state forces deployed in Moreh, meira paibis of Sagang area impounded a truck (Tata DI) loaded with 100 bags of rice destined for Churachandpur, at Sagang bazar, on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters, Sagang Meira Paibi secretary W Ashalata alias Naotombi informed rice consignment was seized during checking of vehicles in Sagang area as part of the counter economic blockade in the valley districts.
Upon spot enquiry, the meira paibis were told that the rice bags were being transported to Churachandpur.
The rice consignment was brought by one Nongmaithem Memtombi of Kumbi Mayai Leikai Ward No 6 and the vehicle driven by one Athang Kom of Sagang.
Ashalata also informed that from the disclosure made by Athang Kom and Memtombi, it was learnt that the rice bags were to be handed over to one Johnson Kom of Sagang at Lukhumbi village.
Memtombi along with the driver has been handed over to Kumbi police led by its OC while the confiscated 100 rice bags were dispersed for use by volunteers safeguarding Meetei villages against attacks by Kuki militants.
Ashalata also expressed remorse over involvement of Kom community in transporting rice to Churachandpur despite the fact that Meetei and Kom women vigilantes have been enduring sleepless nights during this time of crisis, and also appealed to the Kom community not to indulge in such activities in future.
