Imphal, September 20 2015:
Aggrieved by Chief Minister O Ibobi's failure to keep his own words of fulfilling the demands of Mapithel Dam Downstream JAC and local villagers, the JAC has banned all dam related works with effect from tomo-rrow.
A public meeting was held today at Tumukhong Thang-jingpokpi under the aegis of the JAC for Mapithel Dam Downstream Affected People, Imphal East.
The meeting resolved to ban all dam related works indefinitely in protest against the Government's failure to fulfil its own assurance.
The JAC and Chief Minister O Ibobi held a meeting at the CM Secretariat on August 26 in presence of MLA Th Shyamkumar.
During the meeting, Ibobi reportedly assured that due arrangements would be made for rehabilitation of the people living in the downstream of Mapithel Dam particularly Tumu-khong, said JAC chairman Y Thoiba.
Even though it has been almost a month since the Chief Minister gave his assurance, there is no sign of transforming the same assurance into action till date.
Quarrying of sand and stone was the main occupation of the people living in the downstream of the dam.
However, since the dam blocked the river current, many people have been left without any employment or source of income.
As the water diverted from the dam is still stinky, local villagers have been fetching water from gorges of Thang-jingpokpi hill everyday, Thoiba added.
