MOMA Project Director K Devadutta has categorically stated that the State is considering to formulate a policy to promote organic farming and utilise floating biomass in Loktak Lake as a fertilizer.
He made the statement at the launch function of a two day workshop on "Role of media in organic farming in Manipur' being held at the complex of Manipur Mountaineering Institute at Churachandpur today.
At the event, K Devadutta continued that the MOMA has been planting organic food on land measuring 37,500 hectare under Manipur Organic Value Chain Development of North East Region and maintained that the MOMA has sold organic food amounting around Rs 89 crore to other States since 2016 .
Saying that the authority concerned is considering to use floating biomass (phumdis) in Loktak Lake as fertilizer in organic farming, the MOMA Project Director stated that the project, once implemented, will help clean the freshwater lake and reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers by about 50 per cent.
"We are also planning to promote organic farming in valley districts too," he added.
Saying that organic products certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) are well liked by the consumers, Devadutta assured that organic fruits and vegetables grown in Manipur will also start getting USDA certification very soon.
The 2 day workshop is being organised by Khelen Thokchom Trust in association with MOMA.
