Police among two held with drugs

A team of Tengnoupal District Police on Saturday seized 3.795 kg of brown sugar worth Rs 2.20 crore from a constable attached to Churachandpur District Police during an operation at a police check post in Tengnoupal.
According to police report, a team of Tengnoupal police station led by sub-inspector A Biren Singh was conducting a routine frisking and checking of vehicles heading towards Imphal from Moreh at the Check Post during which it stopped - a Honda Gity (MN02B 6350) around 8 am Saturday.
On checking the car, 92 soap cases containing brown sugar weighing approximately 3.795 kg were found concealed inside it and two occupants of the vehicle were arrested along with the brown sugar.
On verification one of the drug smugglers identified as D Letkholun Haokip (37), son of D Dongthang Haokip of Lajangphai village, Churachandpur was found to be a police constable attached to Churachandpur Police Reserve Line.
He reportedly told the police that he was transporting the drug.
The other persons identified as Ngamkhohao Haokip (22), son of Seikholun Haokip of Songpeh village, Churachandpur, was driving the vehicle.
Consequently, SP Tengnoupal B Golianmang conveyed to his Churachandpur counterpart about smuggling of drugs by one of its personnel.
The seized drugs are estimated to worth more than Rs 2.20 crore in international market.
A case under NDPS Act, 1985, has been taken up at Tengnoupal police station for further investigation.
Meanwhile, SP Tengnoupal on Saturday constituted dedicated teams for district headquarters and police stations of Tengnoupal, Moreh and Machi to nab drug lords/kingpins as part of War on Drugs campaign of the state government.
He also handed over cash reward to the team involved in Saturday's seizure.
Meanwhile, chief minister N Biren in a Facebook post said, "War on Drugs 2.0.It is very unfortunate to find police personnel involving in drug trafficking.
Whoever they may be, anybody involving in drug business will not be tolerated".
On March 25, the CM had warned drug dealers and peddlers to either surrender or face consequences of stringent action which will be taken against them.
Any person arrested with illegal drugs, regardless of quantity, would face compulsory jail term of one year which will be extendable up to two years under the relevant act, said Biren, who also holds the home portfolio.
