Chandel, October 31 2022:
Despite the much tom tommed Go to Hills Mission, a village in Chandel district has been 'surviving' without electricity for 6-7 years.
Locals of Thorcham village under Chakpikarong sub-division in Chandel district had enjoyed electricity for about a month only in 2015 .
Since then, the villagers have been without electricity.
This came to light when media persons visited the village and enquired about their grievances.
"We got to enjoy electricity for about a month only in 2015.Since then, we have been reeling under darkness till today," said RL Moel, chief of Thorcham village.
He said, even as Chandel has become an Aspirational district, Thorcham village under the district is lacking in all amenities.
Union and State Ministers and top bureaucrats have held series of review meetings for development of Chandel district, but the Government has failed to address the basic needs of the village.
Electricity first reached the village in 2015.But after a month, the electric lines got snapped by a storm carrying rain.
Ever since, the village has been reeling under darkness.
Even though repeated appeals have been made to the Government and the Electricity Department, the electricity lines have not been repaired till today, Moel said.
A transformer, which was installed by the Electricity Department is now lying defunct and covered with grass.
While all are facing the hardship without electricity, students, women and elderly are mostly feeling the brunt.
Students are not able to study at night, he said.
Meanwhile, Christmas--one of the biggest festivals is around the comer and the villagers are hoping to celebrate it with light and great enthusiasm, Moel said, appealing to the Government and the department concerned to bring electricity back to the village before December.
It may be noted that in 2018, the Government of India had celebrated the electrification of Leisang village in Kangpokpi district as the last village to get electrified.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that every single village in India has access to electricity.
