Court extends Mark Haokip's jail term

The Court of Special Judge, Imphal West extended the judicial custody of Dr Mark Thangmang Haokip, who was arrested for making statements allegedly promoting enmity and ill-will among different groups or communities, from 90 to 180 days.
On Monday, Mark Haokip was produced before the court from Sajiwa Jail with an appeal by the case IO to further extend the judicial remand.
As per the IO's report, Mark, who is the president of a banned outfit, Government of The People's Democratic Republic of Kukiland issued a joint press release with other office bearers of the outfit on May 30, calling for waging war against India to establish a separate state.
On top of this, he also made posts on social media platforms inciting enmity among communities, in addition to promoting his website, www.kukigovt.com with the objective of spreading anti-government rhetoric.
At the time of his arrest, police also seized one mobile phone, laptop, pen drive, diary and 20 other incriminating materials.
The seized laptop had been sent to NIELT, Kohima for forensic analysis.
After the end of his police custody, Mark Thangmang was first remanded to judicial custody for 5 days.
According to Manipur Amendment Act, 1983, the judicial custody period of 60 days and 90 days under Section 167 of CrPC has been increased 120 and 180 days respectively.
Under Section 121, 121-A and 400 of IPC, the punishment includes lifetime imprisonment or capital punishment, the 180-day period is enough time for the case proceeding to be carried out.
Thus, the Court declared that the IO's application for extending the remand period to 180 days holds merit and disposed of the same.
