Akaba remembered on 16th death anniversary

The 16th death anniversary of Chingsubam Akaba was observed today at Wakha Leima Ching and Old Assembly Hall, today.
The observance was organised by Wakhallon Mannaba Apunba (WAMA), Kangleipak and Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) .
Floral tributes were paid to the statue of Akaba at Wakha Leima Ching while the main function was held at Old Assembly Hall in the attendance of WAMA president Moirangthem Naokhomba Meetei, MEELAL president Khaidem Ingocha Meetei, former president M Naodalamkhomba, WASDEV president RK Tharaksana and ex Minister RV Mingthing.
WAMA secretary general Paonam Thakaba Meetei said that Chingsubam Akaba was born on November 9, 1944 at Soibam Leikai Meri Leirak.

Saying that Akaba, during his lifetime, focused on promoting the script of Manipur and put much efforts to create unity among the local populace till his last breath, he added that Akaba played a central role in the formation of MEELAL in 2003 and in introducing Meitei Mayek in school curriculum.
Recognition of Meitei Mayek as a 8th schedule language of India was partly because of the contribution of Akaba, Thakaba said and continued that the contribution of the leader to the State was immense.
Further stating that Akaba was a member of more than 10 organisations who dedicated his life for the cause of the State, he rued that Akaba unfortunately was assassinated on December 31, 2006 for reasons unknown to them.
The last rites of Akaba amidst hue and cry and in the presence of hundreds of people from both hill and valley districts at Wakha Leima Ching, he recalled.
