Tributes paid to Chingsubam Akaba

The 16th death anniversary of Chingsubam Akaba observed at Old Legislative Assembly hall, here, under the joint aegis of Wakhallon Manaba Apunba (WAMA), Kangleipak and Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) .
The observance was marked by offering of floral tributes to the photo of Akaba and recitation of poems dedicated to him.
Speaking on the occasion, former minister RV Minthing pointed out that Meetei Mayek is the only script in the entire north east region to have existed for centuries and Chingsubam Akaba was one of the rare individuals who worked sincerely for reviving, promoting and preserving the same for the future generations.
Delivering the key note address of the event, WAMA secretary Paonam Thala Meetei informed that script proponent Akaba had untiringly worked for the promotion of Manipuri language, culture and script till his last breath.
It was during the time of Chingsubam Akaba that MEELAL was established in 2003 with him as the president and made all efforts to introduce the script in the school syllabus and it was only in 2006 that the state government acceded to the demand of MEELAL and finally included Meetei Mayek in the school syllabus of class I and II .
Now the script is being taught up to the master's level, he said, while adding that inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution also had his huge contributions.
The observance function was also attended by MEELAL advisor M Naodalenkhomba, president Khaidem Ingocha Meetei and WAMA president Moirangthem Naokhomba Meetei among others.
