Imphal, December 31 2022:
The Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) hosted a programme as a tribute to media persons on the last day of the year and presented gifts to select journalists.
Christened "Meet the Media Fraternity", the programme held at Kwakeithel was attended by AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shamjai and DESAM president Leishang-them Lamyanba as presidium members.
At the occasion, Wangkhemcha Shamjai extended gratitude to the student organisation for holding a programme every year to honour media persons.
Saying that journalists neither have friends nor foes, the AMWJU president maintained that the duty of media persons is to inform the masses about the happenings in the world.
He appealed to all to refrain from circulating unverified or fake news on social media.
Further stating that media persons have been playing a key role to bring uniform development and quality education and in highlighting the drawbacks of the State such as increasing population of non-locals, he thanked all journalists for their contributions.
W Shamjai also conveyed New Year greetings to one and all.
Lamyanba said that journalists play an important role in the formation of public opinion and in building emotional attachment among the people.
He also maintained that the people are indebted to media persons who work day and night to disseminate latest news to the masses.
Saying that there are many chronic issues in Manipur which need to be settled, he added that influx of illegal immigrants is one of the major threats which threaten the survival of indigenous people.
Claiming that Manipur has become a heavily dependent State with a meagre revenue, the DESAM president stated that the indigenous people of Manipur are staring at an uncertain future due to varied challenges.
Lamyanba continued that the DESAM will take up more programmes in 2023 to bring quality education in Manipur and create a sense of economic nationalism among the indigenes.
At the functions, gifts were presented to journalists belonging to different media houses.
