Imphal, September 16 2015:
Five families have been ostracised and their houses burnt by the villagers of Chaoshang Khunou of Khoupum sub-division in Tamenglong district today.
In a statement, Chaoshang Village Authority chairman G Lanaimei said that families of five persons identified as Dingtanlung, Pouchalung, Tenkaolung, Hokhopou and Lunganlung were banished for wrongfully electing Nambol Koichingtong resident Tamjanlung as the village chief.
A controversy erupted in the village after Tamjanlung became the village chief as he had sold a vast tract of land of the village to a valley based NGO in connivance with these five persons.
The area included around 500 acres of land towards Irang river side, 50 acres towards Leimatak side and another 50 acres towards Leishok, the statement said.
It added that Chaoshang Khunou villagers asked these five persons to make a clarification on the issue many years back.
However, they have been maintaining silence instead of making a reasonable clarification.
As such, 180 villagers of Chaoshang Khunou burnt down the houses of these five persons and ostracised them, the statement said.
