Preservation of ozone layer day held

Divisional Forest Officer, Central Forest Division, Manipur observed the 30th International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer at Sawombung High School in Imphal East district today.
Speaking at the occasion as chief guest, Imphal East DC M Joy said that the State Government is planning to provide an alternative livelihood to check felling of trees and mass burning of forest areas for jhum cultivation at hill areas.
He also urged the students, youth and public to carry out mass plantation drives to check depletion of ozone layer and save future generation.
Speaking at the occasion, Divisional Forest Officer of Central Division, L Joykumar said that the day is observed globally to check ozone layer depletion.
He also mentioned the urgent need for mass afforestation to save environment.
Saying that people must never forget that protection of forest is necessary for sustained survival of human beings on the earth, Joykumar said that global warming has now become a major concern.
Central Circle Conservator of Forest, Th Mohendro said that ozone layer plays a vital role for the well being of humans.
Depletion of ozone layer may create many dreaded diseases to human beings, he added.
Saying that the Central Government is set to introduce a programme to prepare nurseries of tree saplings by students at the school level this year, Mohendro said that Rs 25000 would be provided to every selected schools for the preparation of 1000 saplings.
As part of the function, a large number of saplings were planted at the campus of Sawombung High School.
Sawombung Gram Panchayat Pradhan S Ibomcha and Sawombung High School Headmaster Ng Joykumar were also present at the function.
