Imphal, March 01 2022:
Manipur University students staged a sit-in protest at MU Traffic Island on Tuesday demanding MU authorities to conduct Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) election by March 5 .
Speaking to the media, one of the protestors, Sanasam Steven pointed out that MUSU election is generally held on February 6 every year, but even after lapse of the normal schedule the MU authorities are remaining dormant.
Such negligence is an affront to rights of students, he said and also informed that the MU dean, VC and PMO were repeatedly urged for conducting the election on time.
The MU authorities should not suppress the rights of students in the name of Covid-19 .
The Covid situation in the state has improved.
When general election can be held under Covid-19 guidelines why not MUSU s election, he questioned.
Steven decried that due to lack of representative body, students are facing many issues, including conduct of class and examination.
Confusion has arisen amongst students following the MU authority's indecision over offline and online mode of examination.
All decisions have not been taken properly.
If the conduct of MUSU election remains pending they will write to Centre and if no action is taken they will have to resort to agitation.
Authority concerned must conduct the election at the earliest considering the welfare of students, he further reiterated.
