Kakching, March 15 2022:
Kakching Forest Range staff on Tuesday released into the wild, a rare flying squirrel which was rescued by one Kshetrimayum Ranjan from his residence near Kakching Garden and handed over to Kakching Forest staff.
Speaking to the media, assistant conservator of forests Naorem Munal Meitei stressed that as many wild animals are crossing into human settlement areas due to wildfires, climate change and deforestation, all citizens should contribute towards rescuing and handing them over to the nearest Forest Department office as done by Ksh Ranjan.
Flying squirrel is a unique animal which is nocturnal, glides from one tree to another using a parachute like membrane that stretches from wrist to ankle called patagium.
It survives on fruits'and insects and as such plays an important role in maintaining ecological balance, Munal explained.
