Workshop on 'Ensemble of Manipuri and Bengali Folk Song' held

A workshop on "Ensemble of Manipuri and Bengali Folk Song" organised jointly by Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory and Archival Centre for Arts, Manipur under the aegis of Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC), Kolkata, Ministry of Culture, Govt of India was held today at Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory Complex located at Langthabal Kunja.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Yumnam Sadananda Singh, Director Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory, shared that the workshop had been partly financed by EZCC.
The Director stressed on the importance of folk song/folk music stating that the workshop was organised because people have a close bond with folk music from the moment of birth till death, including all the important rituals and festivals in our culture which are always accompanied with folk music.

He added that folk music can also be used on mime performances.
Seeing the progress of both Manipuri and Bengali folk music, the idea to combine these two together led to the culmination of this workshop, he said.
He also shared that during the workshop Manipuri and Bengali folk songs will be performed in turns and then a fusion of these two types of folk music will be shown which will provide a new and unique experience for the audience.
The 13-member Manipur troupe was led by Renowned folk singer Lourembam Bedabati while the 5-member Bengali troupe was be led by Dr Swapan Mukhopadhya.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, Budha Chingtham, president Cultural Workers and Activists Forum (CWAF) expressed his appreciation for the folklore ensemble calling both Bengali and Manipuri folk music as rich and adding that a creative interaction between the two was an utmost necessity.
He further said that if folk music/folk culture can be popularised then it can do a great job of representing the state and becoming a cultural identifier.
The event was also attended by L Upendro Sharma, former director JNM Dance Academy as president of the function.
