ATSUM members jailed

The court of CJM Imphal West on Saturday remanded the five arrested members of All Manipur Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) to judicial custody for 15 days.
Imphal West District Police had arrested ATSUM president Paotinthang Lupheng, general secretary Andria Sinruwang, Information secretary Khaiminlen Doungel, Environment secretary Marankhai Awungshi and ex-president John Pulamte on August 2 for imposing a 24-hour total shutdown over the demand for discussion of The Manipur Hill Areas Autonomous District Council Bill, 2021 recommended by the Hill Areas Committee, during the recent session of Manipur Legislative Assembly.
All five were produced before the Court by Imphal West District Police on August 3, which remanded them to police custody till August 6 for interrogation.
They were again produced before the Court on Saturday after the expiry of the previous remand period, with a prayer for judicial remand.
After listening to the report of the case IO, the Court accepted the prayer and remanded them to judicial custody for 15 days.
Meanwhile, the court has rejected the request made by Heingang PS to formally arrest the five ATSUM leaders in connection with another FIR.
