CAU aiding production of new agricultural goods

Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal has not only been assisting in the production of new agricultural goods but also in the integration of new scientific methods in agricultural practices of the farmers.
Speaking to The People's Chronicle, an official of the University informed that CAU Imphal was established in the state with its headquarters in Imphal under Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) on January 26,1993 under the Central Agricultural University Act 1992 (no.40 of 1992).The university now has constituent colleges in Assam and in other north-eastern states.

desh in 2001; College of Community Sciences in Meghalaya in 2004; College of Agriculture Engineering & Post Harvest Technology in Sikkim in 2006; College of Post Graduate Studies in Agricultural Sciences, Umiam (Barapani) in Meghalaya in 2006; College of Agriculture, Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh in 2013; College of Agriculture, Kyrdemkulai in Meghalaya; College of Horticulture, Bermiok in Sikkim and College of Food Technology, Lamphelpat in 2015; College of Horticulture, Thengzwal in Mizoram and College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, Nagaland in 2016.Apart from this, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) were opened in different states to facilitate farmers.
In 2006, KVKs were hrst opened in Andro, Imphal East district, followed by KVKs Siang in Arunachal Pradesh and KVKs Aizawl, Mizoram.
KVKs in Meghalaya were opened in East Garo Hills and South Garo Hills in 2017, while KVK Sepahijala was opened in Tripura in 2018.The official then said that the main objective of CAU Imphal is to produce graduates and post-graduates who could compete globally in the agriculture and allied sciences sector; in addition to providing benefits of agro-technologies to farmers, entrepreneurs and to agro industries; increase production and promote a sustainable and profitable farming system.
So far, the university has introduced nine undergraduate, 45 master and 25 PhD Degree programmes in different agriculture and allied sciences subjectS/disciplines in all its 13 constituent colleges across the north eastern states.
Multi Technology Testing Centres and Vocational Training Centres have been opened in 6 states, namely Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Meghalaya.
Furthermore, the University has successfully produced 4 high yielding rice variants, namely CAU-RI (Tamphaphou), CAU-R2 (Tomthinphouj, CAU-R3 (Mangalphou) and CAU-R4 (Enotphou), in addition to obtaining several huge achievements in various aspects.
Among the ranking of agricultural universities in India, CAU Imphal ranks the 13th position, the official conveyed.
