Imphal, August 06 2022:
A one day sensitisation programme on 'Palliative care service in Manipur' was held at Sangai Hotel, here on Saturday.
National Health Mission, Manipur State Mission director Dr Somorjit Ningombam, who attended as chief guest of the programme, said that it is necessary to provide palliative care to people suffering from chronic diseases and facing numerous problems.
All humans are born and sure to die one day but many people suffering from chronic diseases, particularly those battling cancer, are waiting for their final days.
These people face mental, financial and domestic problems and hence it is important to provide palliative care to them.
Providing palliative care means extending financial and mental help apart from understanding wishes of the patients and encouraging them to have courage, Dr Somorjit said, adding that sharing suffering of the patients and encouraging them to take medication and vaccine is very important.
According to Dr Somorjit, majority of families having members with chronic diseases face numerous problems and there are even cases of family conflict and break-up.
He also said that 'Care of elderly and palliative care' is being included in Government of India's national programme and Saturday's sensitisation programme was organised under this scheme.
The sensitisation programme jointly organised by the Non-communicable Disease Cell of NHM Manipur and the state health department was also attended by additional director (health) Dr Lalthari Hmar and Institute of Palliative Medicine, Kolkata director Suresh Kumar.
