Bodies set deadline for formation of Population Commission

Six student bodies, namely AMSU, AIMS, DESAM, MSF, KSA and SUK, have exerted pressure on authorities concerned for initiating necessary process to set up Manipur State Population Commission within a week.

six student bodies said that uninterrupted influx of outsiders from other states and countries into the state has always been a great threat to the indigenes while overpowering of socio-political economy of the state and ownership of the land has also affected the indigenous communities.
Several movements have been launched so as to counter such forces, it added.
Continuing the efforts of securing the future of the indigenous people, the six student bodies along with other organisations have been exerting pressure for finding out the number of illegal immigrants in the state by implementing NRC, the joint release said, while lauding the resolutions adopted for exerting pressure for implementing NRC and set up Manipur State Population Commission in the just concluded 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly session by considering these demands as rational.
Pointing out that NE states share borders with neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar, the bodies recalled the numerous reports of influx of Bangladeshi immigrants from Bangladesh, which has high population density.
In addition to it, the population and number of villages in some areas of hills have increased exponentially at unbelievable rate.
Several evidences were also found about illegal immigrants from Myanmar residing in the state.
The unrestrained influx of outsiders from other states for settlement and business purpose needs to be examined critically and checked effectively, it added.
Meanwhile, MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has lauded the state assembly, Manipur CM N Biren, speaker Thokchom Satyabarta and Thangmeiband MLA Kh Joykisan, who brought up the issue, for adopting implementation of NRC and setting up of Population Commission.
He farther exhorted CM Biren, Th Satyabarta and Lamlai MLA Kh Ibomcha for the resolution adopted in the assembly for exerting pressure on the centre for providing a separate code for Sanamahi religion in the census operation.
