Major Chongtha Mia tribute event in Tripura

Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 chief consultant H Ibotombi Khuman has informed that a delegation of the committee along with media persons will pay homage to Major Chongtha Mia on his 115th death anniversary at the late martyr's statue at Narayan Khamar village on the bank of Sinai River in Tripura.
Addressing media persons in this regard at IPSA office, here, bn Tuesday, Ibotombi said that Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War 1891, Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak was established in 2018 and since its inception, the committee has been organising commemorative events for all those who attained martyrdom in the war along with their families.
The committee is also developing memorial complexes and erecting statues including those exiled after the war.
After the end of Anglo-Manipuri War 1891, 23 brave soldiers of Manipur who took part in the battle including the then Maharaj Kul-lachandra and Major Chongtha Mia were exiled to Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Even though the exile period ended in 1896, none of those exiled were allowed to return to Manipur.
Accordingly, Major Chongtha Mia stayed briefly at Radhakund in Uttar Pradesh and later settled at Narayan Khamar village in Tripura where he breathed his last on January 17, 1908 .
In commemoration of the brave soldier, the committee erected a life-size 10 feet high statue of Major Chongtha Mia at Narayan Khamar village and.
the statue was unveiled on January 17, 2020 by the then art and culture minister L Jayantakumar.
Owing to COVID-19 pandemic, the committee could not visit Tripura and pay homage to the statue of Major Chongtha Mia at Narayan Khamar village but a 24-member delegation of the committee is fully prepared to visit Tripura and pay homage to the brave soldier on his 115th death anniversary on January 14, 2023, Ibotombi Khuman said.
