Restore natural farming system, improve irrigation: IFM

A team of Irabot Foundation Manipur (IFM) led by its president Kh Gopen Luwang submitted memorandums to chief minister N Biren Singh and agriculture minister Th Biswajit Singh on Sunday requesting the government to restore Manipur's natural fanning system and improve irrigation facilities among other proposals.
In a release, IFM assistant publicity secretary K Abung stated that the memorandum contained resolutions adopted by the Foundation during its '4th Farmers' Poinu Meet' after deliberation on various suggestions made by CSOs and experts at the meeting.
The memorandum demanded the government to take up measures to restore state's natural farming system and declare Manipur an organic state by 2024; develop irrigation facilities on war footing and investigate the failure of irrigation canals in Manipur; formulate a water policy as well as rejuvenate all traditional water bodies; formulate a farmer's agriculture market policy in morning; implement regulations for protection and preservation of all arable and agricultural land; frame and implement land use policy to ensure best utilisation of land in both hills and valley areas; establishment of facilities to preserve indigenous and traditional seeds; allocate more funds to agriculture, horticulture, veterinary, fisheries and minor irrigation, command area agency departments along with filling up the vacant sanctioned posts of these departments and address the impacts of climate change on indigenous agriculture and increasing pattern of disasters such as droughts and floods in the state, it further mentioned.
