Imphal, December 11 2022:
Governor La Ganesan, chief minister N Biren Singh, ministers Th Basanta Kumar Singh and Awangbow Newmai and Manipuri Chanura Leishem Marup (Macha Leima) have extended warm greeting to the people of Manipur on the occasion of 'Nupi Lal' day, which falls on December 12 .
In his message, Governor Ganesan said: 'It is quite befitting to remember those Manipuri women who fought against the oppressive economic and administrative policies of Manipur Maharaja and the then British Government in Manipur in the year, 1939 .
They stormed the State Durbar Office asking for immediate stoppage of rice ex port, in which around 21 women were injured from the bayonets and butts of soldiers' weapons on December 12, 1939 .
The day is remembered as Nupi (Women) Lal (War) Numit (Day)" .
"The revolt of women against the monopolistic administration signifies the importance of women in the state and their role in the society," the Governor maintained, while appealing the people of Manipur to follow the path of the brave Manipuri mothers who stood up against injustice and fought for their rights for a prosperous and peaceful state.
Meanwhile, chief minister Biren recounted that on December 12, 1939, our brave 'Imas' came to the forefront revolting against the British imperialists calling for immediate stoppage of rice export which had triggered an artificial famine in the state.
Thus, every year, December 12 is observed as 'Nupilal Numit' as a tribute to the courage, sacrifices and patriotism of the women of Manipur, Biren added.
"Today, our womenfolk continue to not only play a vital and active role in social issues but they are also leading from the forefront in every possible held including art and culture, sports, public administration, medicine and entrepreneurship, among others.
Kunjarani Devi, Mary Kom, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu, Linthoi Chanambam, etc., are a few of our sportswomen who have shone bright in the international stage and demonstrated the courage and strength of our women," N Biren said.
Meanwhile, in their messages, ministers Th Basanta and Awangbow Newmai said that all over the world Manipuri women have been known for their valour, skill and active, involvement in many social, economic, political and cultural activities.
They are the role models as a mother, wife, daughter, sister and a daughterin-law.
In the earlier days they had shown their might in bringing about justice in the state.
The ministers then appealed to the public to follow the path of the brave Manipuri mothers who stood up against injustice and fought for a prosperous and peaceful state and to pay tribute to the brave 'Imas' of Manipur.
On the other hand, a Macha Leima release informed that the organisation has been observing "Nupilal" as 'Nupigi Numit' since 1973 to honour the sacrifices of the women folk who fought in the two Nupi Lal in 1904 and 1939, after which the state government decided to organise the event at the state level in the year 1980 .
Stating that only the women folk can unite a degrading society, as history has proven; Macha Leima appealed to the public, women folk in particular, to follow the path of the brave mothers who fought the two Nupi Lal against the then mighty British rulers.
