Imphal, December 11 2022:
Former rebel leader RK Sanayaima alias Meghen has categorically stated that Meetei/Meitei which had the might to establish an inde-pendent kingdom in the ancient period is living more like a helpless victim who could not muster their strength in the contemporary period.
RK Meghen made the statement at an awards distribution ceremony orga- nised by the Apunba Khori-rolgee Malemgee Lup at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound, today.
At the function, different awards were conferred to writers Pukhrambam Biren and Chongtham (O) Subadhani Devi.
There, the former rebel leader continued that the Meiteis used to be one of dominant groups in Mani-pur but they have now been reduced to a level of minority.
"It is known by all experts and demographers that all the indigenous communities in Manipur are facing a wide range of threats to their survival due to demographic imbalance and other factors," he noted.
Saying that illegal entry of non-locals in Manipur is a hot topic which needs to be addressed urgently, RK Meghen maintained that the Meeteis are experiencing great pressure due to the influx of unauthorised out- siders from all directions.
He continued that uncertainty and insecurity being faced by the indigenous groups today is much grea-ter than the one felt during the period of Seven Years Devastation.
"It is time we recollect all the perils of the past and face the challenges of the present," he said and added that Meiteilon, though rich in literature, is becoming a waning language.
" We must work together to promote Meitelon as it is a common language for all the indigenous groups settled in Manipur," he added.
Apunba Khorirolgee Malemgee Lup president W Amuchou Meitei, vice-president of Manipur Short Story Society Kh Kanta and writer cum critic L Memo also attended the programme as dais members.
