Government urged to settle Ahongpung issue

Maichou Ningshing Lup, Khurai said that encroachment by non-local settlers at Khurai Ahongpung sacred site and the support rendered to encroachers (Teli) by local leaders for their selfish gains led to the December 5 unfortunate incident at Khurai Ahongei.
According to a statement of Maichou Ningshing Lup, dispute over the land belonging to Khurai Ahongpung remains unsettled for a long time as leaders who do not understand history of the sacred site and believe in harmonious co-existence of all communities settling in the state sided with the encroachers.
It said that both the land dispute and controversy over Khurai Ahongpung were created by corrupt and partisan officials of the revenue department, district administration and other relevant departments.
The regarding the December 5 incident, the Lup said that local Teli people created nuisance when some Meetei people tried to install an idol of Soubam Lairembi at the sacred site located on the side of the Imphal-Ukhrul road.
When the Soubam Lairembi idol was about to be installed at the sacred site, a local leader named Sitaram sent out some Teli youth and destroyed the idol.
Taking advantage of the resulting mob, Teli people removed their idol placed inside the nearby temple and shifted it to another place but accused the Meetei of removing their idol, the Lup said and accused Teli people of making unfounded charge against the Meetei.
While welcoming inspection by the chief minister, local MLA, Khurai MLA and government officials at Khurai Ahongpung, the Lup expressed hope that government will look into the matter seriously and resolve the dispute at the earliest.
