IFAD/ NERCORMP reaches out to underprivileged women of Ukhrul

IFAD/ NERCORMP ((International Fund for Agricultural Development, Rome/North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Project) has reached out to a large number of underprivileged women of Ukhrul District and transformed their living standards to achieve a sustainable economy.
A group of 20 women from Ukhrul village formed Mathuk SHG to venture in various activities and improve their socio-economic status.
Members of Mathuk SHG began their venture by saving Rs 10 every month in 2001 .
Speaking to media persons, LS Ningshim, chairperson of Mathuk SHG appreciated IFAD/ NERCORMP for the timely financial assistance.
Ningshim stated that a sum of Rs 10,000 as revolving fund was first received followed by Rs 20,000 in 2017 from NEC to boost their business.

Ningshim continued that they invested their savings in Income Generating Activities such as poultry, piggery, weaving, food & fruit processing and micro retail business to generate income.
"Mathuk SHG has now saved over Rs 10 Lakh in its account", added Ningshim.
Ayao Raleng, a member of Mathuk SHG shared that the revolving fund helped her to set up a piggery farm at Kasomtang and earn more than Rs 1.5 lakh annually.
Another member Shomipam informed that her poultry farm in Luiyainaotang supplies chicken for the whole locality.
Recently, members of Mathuk SHG recently went for an exposure trip to Agra, Jaipur and Delhi wherein they interacted with other performing SHGs to establish better working network and knowledge.
This was possible with the constant support and assistance of the District Support Team (DST), Ukhrul District Community Resource Management Society (UDCRMS) .
The DST team also educated the members of Mathuk SHG on book keeping and saving concepts to help the women folk become economically independent.
It may be mentioned that after the IFAD Project ended in 2008, UDCRMS constituted an apex body of SHGs called Ukhrul District Women Institute of Micro-Credit (UDWIM) as a sustainable strategy.
More than 865 SHGs of Ukhrul district have registered in UDWIM so far.
