Tribute paid to forefathers as CSOs, institutes observe Khongjom Day

Various organisations and institutes including Writers' Platform, Manipur (WRITPLAT); Yairipok Universal College and Old Age Home, Langjing Achouba observed the 132nd Khongjom Day on Sunday.
In a release, Yairipok Universal College, Wangkhem Huidrom principal informed that the 132nd Khongjom Day was observed by its Department of History and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) at its premises on Sunday under the theme 'Tribute to Known and Unknown Heroes' .
In another release, WRIT-PLAT publicity secretary Shantikumar Sagolsem conveyed that it observed the 132nd Khongjom Day as well as International Book and Copyright Day at Manipur Voluntary Health Association (MVHA) auditorium, Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal on Sunday.
The programme was marked by poetry recitation on Khongjom War by 19 poets, it added.
On the other hand, the 132nd Khongjom Day was observed by Old Age Home, Langjing Achouba at the residence of Konthoujam Chaobi at Konthoujam Maning Leikai on Sunday, a release said.
Khongjom Day was also observed under the joint aegis of Sahitya Seva Samiti, Kakching and Eeramdam Khorjei Apunba Lup (Eekhal) - Hiyanglam Wabagai at the Hiyanglam Mayai Leikai residence of Sahitya Akademi awardee Maibam Nabakishwar, on Sunday.
The event was marked by offering of floral tributes to the photo of Paona Brajabashi and observance of a two-minute silence in honour of those martyrs who led down their lives in the Khongjom battle.
The observance function was attended by Dhanamanjuri University Imphal VC Professor Nongmaithem Rajmuhon as chief guest while Samiti president Kshetri Bira (Sahitya Akademi Awardee) and Eekhal Hiyanglam Wabagai president Maibam Nabakishwar (Sahitya Akademi Awardee) jointly presided over the event.
Historical and Cultural Research Centre, Imphal president Nairoibam Indramani and Manipur University Manipuri department associate professor Dr Chirom Rajketan spoke on the topics "Manipur Puwarida Khongjom Lal".
Around 20 writers also took part in the poetry recitation programme organised as part of the observance.
Meanwhile, Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War 1891, Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak offered tributes to the martyrs of Manipur, who either laid down their lives, were captured and hanged till death or sent to exile, on the occasion of Memorial Day of the historic war, that changed the fate of Manipur.
Informing this in a press release, the committee recalled the series of incidents that led to the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891, after which the British captured Manipur, and the aftermath of the war, as well as the participation from different communities in the war to defend the sovereignty of the then independent Kangleipak.
