Water shortage hits hard Bishnupur farmers

With an objective to find out the inconveniences faced by farmers of Kabowakching under Nambol assembly constituency, Khallei Shillup Manipur along with different organisations and people inspected the agricultural farmlands on Tuesday.
The inspection was attended by Development & Protection United Voluntary Organisation, Nambol working president Konsam Suleshor, Khallei Shillup secretary Thokchom Lamjingba, Modern Club, Kabowakching president Sana-bam Romeshwor and others.
During the visit, farmlands near the high and low canals of Loktak Lift Irrigation were found developed cracks due to prolonged shortage of water and adverse effect on horticultural crops in these farmlands.
According to secretary Lamjingba, the farmers could not reap benefit of Loktak Lift Irrigation as water is not provided when most needed.
Earlier, water sourced from streams of Waroiching hills were used for cultivation of crops, but with mass deforestation in the hills, the streams are almost dry for the last three/four years consequently hindering plantation of tomato, potato, cabbage, strawberry and other horticultural items, he conveyed.
The secretary then urged the government to look into the matter so that farmers could produce food sufficiently and help in making the state become self-reliant.
A farmer of Kabowakching named Inaocha also informed that due to acute shortage of water, crops could not be grown and produced sufficiently, and appealed to the government to look into the matter.
