Responding to a calling attention motion moved by Wangkhei MLA Th Arunkumar with reference to the proposed bandh along Imphal-Ukhrul road by Ima Panthoibi Street Vendors' Union in the assembly session on Monday, the minister said that the government understands plight of the street vendors.
At the same time, one cannot deny the problems created by street vendors in road traffic as well as cleanliness of Imphal city.
The BJP government has been working on resolving the issue since the last term.
Following a three-month survey conducted jointly by three departments, the government has identified 1474 street vendors.
As a result, the department could not accommodate all the street vendors in the temporary market shed, which has a capacity of over 700 seats only.
Unfortunately, after accommodating them through roster system, similar number of street vendors also came forward causing headache to the government in resolving the issue, he said.
As for the plot opposite to Khuman Lampak ISBT, there is a pending case in the court and as such, he could not give any comment on the matter, the minister said while inviting the MLA and stakeholders for a talk over the matter after the assembly session.
