Court convicts two in Lungnila Elizabeth case

The court of Sessions Judge, Imphal East on Tuesday convicted accused Ningombam Romi Meitei and Letkhosei Haokip alias James Kuki in the kidnapping and murder of Lungnila Elizabeth in November, 2003.During the hearing of the case held in the court of Sessions Judge, RK Memcha in connection with an FIR registered by CBI-SSB, accused N Romi Meitei and Letkhosei Haokip (currently injudicial custody) came to the court with their respective counsels.
After thoroughly examining the reports and evidences submitted by the prosecution, the court said that it is clear that accused Romi Meitei alias Romen alias Michael alias Ramesh alias Loyalakpa and Letkhosei Haokip alias James Kuki conspired with other accused person(s) mentioned in the case to kidnap Lungnila Elizabeth for ransom and subsequently killed her between November 4 to 12, 2003, However, there were no evidence of sexual assault on the victim.
The prosecution proved the charges levelled against the two accused u/s 120-B, 364-A and 302 of IPC.
As such, the court found Romi and Letkhosei guilty u/s 120-B, 364-A and 302 of IPC.
It then fixed the sentence hearing on March 13.The court further cancelled the bail of Romi along with the bail bond and sent him to judicial custody till March 13.Convict Letkhosei was also sent to judicial remand.
It then instructed for producing both convicts be fore the court on March 13 for the sentence hearing.
Mention may be made her that proscribed KCP (Nando) Group leader Th Nando alias Nanao, who.
had been convicted by the court in the same case, escaped from JNIMS Orthopaedic Ward on March 26, 2019 .
The case was investigated by CBI for 4 years and charge sheets filed against 4 accused including Nando.
The court had fixed March 20, 2019 for announcing the quantum of punishment to be given to convicts Nando and O Deben alias Arnold.
