Shija saves life

Shija Hospitals has managed to rescue the life of a labourer who accidentally fell into a machine with right leg stuck till waist level in a brick farm at Maklang.
Upon receiving a call from the brick farm about the accident, a trauma team from Shija Hospitals rushed to the spot and rescued the life of the labourer, said Takhellambam Premkumar, Deputy Manager-Business Development of Shija Hospitals in a statement.
The patient was found in a conscious state with normal blood pressure in the initial assessment, it said and added that the patient, however, was in serious pain.
The trauma, without wasting any time, administered intravenous fluid, mild sedation and analgesia to the patient, the statement continued and the extent of the crush injury could not be assessed initially as the patient was stuck in the machine.
The team later decided to cut the machine with the help of the fire brigade team, Premkumar said and added that the trauma team called OT staff, anaesthesia team, blood and other materials from Shija Hospitals.
As the patient could not be extracted despite giving the best effort, the team sought approval from the family members of the patient for a possible on site amputation, he added.
Finally the patient was given procedural sedation and right leg amputation was performed, Premkumar said and added that the life saving surgery was performed by a team led by Dr Jugindra S, Consultant General & Laparoscopic Surgeon cum Director Medical Services; Dr Sweta Khuraijam, Consultant Emergency Physician; Dr Sidarth Shah, Plastic Surgery Resident; Dr Ram Kalpesh, Emergency Medicine Resident; Dr Parinitha, Anaesthesiology Resident; Th Sunilkumar; S.Dayananda and T Peter (Emergency Nursing Officers); Y Sarda and P Premkumar (OT Technicians) and other support staff.
He further said that blood transfusion started after extracting the patient.
The patient has been admitted to Shija Hospitals.
