Imphal, October 24 2022:
Khonghampat Mantri Leikai Youth Development Club, Mantri Leikai Development Committee and Mantri Leikai Women Welfare Association in coordination with CPI Khonghampat branch staged a protest demonstration highlighting demands of the suffering farmers at Khonghampat Mantri Leikai community hall on Monday.
The main demand raised during the protest was that the government should provide compensation to farmers at the rate of Rs 30,000 per Sangam of paddy field as crop production will be reduced to 90 percent this year due to shortage of rain, absence of irrigation network and urea problem.
Another demand was that the government should convene a special session of Manipur Legislative Assembly to discuss the suffering of farmers and take up necessary measures.
Addressing famers and people during the protest, CPI Manipur state council secretary L Thoirel contended that though BJP claims of having a double engine government it continues to dishonour farmers who are to produce food for the people.
Majority of farmers in Manipur are suffering and they would not be able to provide 'Loushal' to landlords this time as there would be less yield, he said and maintained that the government should help the distressed farmers.
