Imphal, October 24 2022:
Apart from living in the State, many non-local people have adopted Meitei surnames and this is a serious matter which needs immediate deliberation among all the CSOs of the State, said AMUCO president Pheiroijam Nando Luwang.
He was speaking at the 33rd foundation day of the All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) held today at Maharaja Chandrakirti Auditorium, Palace Compound.
The family or the group of families which accept non-people to adopt their surnames have committed a serious offence against the Manipuri society, Nando said.
Asking if the non-local people, after adopting a local surname, can share common genealogy with the family or clan whose surname they have adopted or whether they can have same attachment to Manipur just like local people, the AMUCO president asserted that all these matters need thorough examination and urgent intervention.

In the past, military forces were used to conquer or wipe out a Nation.
But these days, the most effective weapons to dominate or wipe out a community are media including social media, movies, television etc, he said.
Questioning how much cultural elements of the State are circulated and watched in mobile phones used by youngsters in the State, Nando Luwang underscored the need to check which cultural elements are more popular among young Manipuri girls.
"We need to understand and promote our culture, history and identity and we should be proud of our heritage", he said.
"It is time to check corruption of indigenous cultural elements and obliteration of our identity by foreign elements", he added.
AMAWOVA general secretary Ksh Sujata said that the association was set up on October 24, 1989 with the primary objective of establishing peace and security in Manipuri society through active participation of womenfolk in the people's sustained struggle against repression.
In the aftermath of Manipur's merger into the Indian Union, a large percentage of the State's male population fell prey to intoxicating drugs.
The situation was so grave that womenfolk had to launch a sustained movement against abuse of drugs and other intoxicating substances.
In addition, Manipuri women took active part in many other major issues of the State, Sujata said.
Manipur University, Manipuri Department HoD Prof Toijam Tampha, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur president Longjam Memchoubi and AMAWOVA president Y Kunjarani attended the foundation day celebration as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
