Imphal, October 24 2022:
A team of Protection and Preservation Committee, Manipur (PPCM) led by Convenor Maibam Bisheshwor has found inconsistencies in the price of goods during an inspection of the utensil shops conducted at Wahengbam Leikai stretch yesterday.
Taking cognizance of the situation, PPCM has urged these shopkeepers to publicly display the prices of their goods in front of their respective shops, as per a statement released today.
PPCM further informed that some shops also sold their products by weight while others did not take the weight of the items into account and fixed the prices according to their whim, PPCM alleged.
Another irregularity reportedly discovered by the PPCM volunteers include not providing genuine receipts, thereby avoiding GST tax.
When the volunteers initiated a dialogue with the shopkeepers, they were informed that officials of the Department of Weights and Measures conduct inspections in the area only once a year, the statement added.
In this regard, PPCM has urged the Department of Weights and Measures to carry out inspections more frequently reasoning that shopkeepers manipulate their weights at will in the absence of strict oversight.
The statement added that PPCM will continue their inspection visits across various markets and sought the support of the Department of Weights and Measures and other relevant authorities.
