According to a statement of the committee, the pangolin was further handed over to the veterinary hospital located at Manipur Zoological Garden, where it will be provided relevant treatment before release at a suitable and safe location.
Committee advisor Dr Kh Samungou said that Chinese Pangolin is an endangered wildlife species protected under Schedule 1 of Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 .
It is known as Safu, Kakcheng Chabi or Samarak Ngamarak in Manipuri.
As it is widely used for medicinal purpose in China and Vietnam, smuggling of the species is also reported in the state, which leads to the dwindling population of the animal, he noted but cautioned that anybody dealing in buying or selling the animal is liable to be punished under the Act.
