Landslides snap NH, inter-district connectivity

Continuous rainfall being experienced across the state since Friday night has triggered massive landslides at numerous places while damage caused to culverts along the Imphal-Jiribam route completely cut off the National Highway 37.The NH-37 remains cut off on Saturday after a major portion of the road caved in between Khongsang and Irang in Noney district due to incessant rainfall over the last few days.
Vehicles plying between Nungba and Puiluan were stranded after the culvert at Chumla stream was washed away following a continuous downpour.
Landslides have also been reported near Joujangtek, Bwanruang Taodaijang and Kotlen along the old Cachar road, which is an alternative route connecting Imphal with Noney district via Bishnupur.
Many heavy trucks coming from Jiribam are stranded at Tamenglong with numerous landslides reported along the highway.
Officials said the affected road between Tamenglong and Imphal is expected to be cleared by Sunday through the old Cachar road.
Similarly, landslides have affected normal life in several areas along the Maram- Peren and Willong-Chakha road.
Apart from incessant rainfall causing serious inconveniences to the public, companies carrying out construction of the Maram Perem road have been forced to remain idle due to rainfall-induced landslides blocking the route.
Workers of the companies are currently being engaged in clearing the fallen boulders and mudsludge.
There are also reports of landslides occurring in between Kangjang and Chakha village of Senapati district and severing inter-village connectivity.
Emergency services including heath related are all hampered by the landslide causing tremendous inconveniences.
Speaking in this regard, Kangjang village chairman K Paolin informed that rainfall since the past few days is the reason for landslides in several areas.
Huge boulders, uprooted trees and mudslides are blocking the road and disrupting transportation of man and material.
Consequently, the villages are facing shortage of essential items, he said, adding that those in need of medical care are in a dilemma on whether to risk travel amid the hostile condition.
Paolin said that they had already informed the government to clear the road but there has been no initiative to establish connectivity.
Normal life has also been badly affected by incessant heavy rain for the last few days in Noney and Tamenglong districts.
Landslides and mudslides have occurred in many locations while rivers in these two districts have crossed the danger mark.
There are no power supplies in some areas while several low-lying areas have been flooded.
Landslides occurred between Khongshang and Irang along the NH-37 and near Tupul and Kaiphundai villages.
The Bishnupur-Khoupum-Rengpang route has also been cut off due to landslides between Rengpang and Taudaijang.
Landslides/mudslides occurred in many locations along Khongshang-Tamenglong road.
Vehicular moment was disrupted along the short-cut road of Tamenglong-Rangkhung, Tamenglong-Tousem and Tamenglong-Tamei road due mudslides in many locations.
Paddy fields in Khoupum valley, Noney district, are under flood water while major rivers in the district - Ijei, Iril, Irang, Barak, Makru, and Leimatak are flowing at the danger mark.
