Imphal, June 18 2022:
A heart-hole closure device was successfully implanted via the neck vein in a girl child who is just four years and six months old at Sky Hospital on June 4, 2022 .
As per a press release by the Sky Hospital and Research Centre Pvt Ltd, the girl child is a resident of Kwakta in Imphal West district and has Down Syndrome and a large birth heart defect called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) thereby causing severe pulmonary arterial hypertension and dilated chambers.
The condition was such that the PDA had to be closed since it was reducing her rate of survival, accordingly the parents opted for device closure of PDA under general anaesthesia.
Usually, a cardiac device is implanted for heart hole closure via femoral vein/artery at the groin level however for this particular child, a large 14/12 mm PDA was implanted via right internal jugular vein (neck vein) under general anaesthesia completely closing the hole as femoral venous access was not possible despite using ultrasound guidance.
Sky Hospital claimed that 'it is the first hospital in the State in which such a heart hole device has been implanted via the 'neck vein'.
Dr L Shyamkishore, Chief Cardiologist expressed contentment over the successful implication of the new technique and appealed to the people of Manipur and Northeastern States not to give up device closure of heart hole for eligible patients even if the conventional leg vein access is not possible, added the release.
