Legal aid extended to prisoners of Sajiwa Jail

District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Imphal West organised an interaction programme with the prisoners of Sajiwa Jail today for extending legal aid to the prisoners.
The programme was attended by Arshad Saeed Shah, secretary of DLSA, Imphal East, P Tolen, advocate and panel lawyer, Manipur State Legal.
Services Authority (MASLSA), other panel lawyers and para legal volunteers of legal aid clinic, Sajiwa Jail, said a press release by DLSA, Imphal West.
During the programme, secretary of DLSA, Imphal East explained the process of criminal proceedings from filing of FIR to investigation and then filing of chargesheet and trial in the Court.
The prisoners were also made aware of their rights provided under Section 12 of the Legal Services Authority Act, 1987 where it guarantees free legal aid to a person in custody.
It was also explained that the interaction programme was held in order to extend legal aids to the under trial prisoners who are unable to move bail on their own, to the convicts who want to go for appeal, to make sure that the prisoners are in good health and to reconnect with the family members of the prisoners who.
had lost contact with their family members.
Today's programme was participated by around 68 under trial prisoners and 20 convicted prisoners who have been sent to prisons by various Courts of Imphal East.
Prisoners who were unable to hire a lawyer of their own will be provided with legal aid and they were given a chance to clear their doubts, added the release.
