Citizens exhorted to join nation building process

As in other parts of the country, Manipur too joined in the observance of Constitution Day with government departments, educational institutions and political organisations conducted different events and activities in connection with the observance on Saturday.
As chief guest of an observance function organised by Law and Legislative Affairs Department at JN Manipur Dance Academy, here law and legislative affairs minister Thounaojam Basantakumar urged the citizens to contribute their mite in the nation building process by promoting unity and not by disrupting it.
Stating that Constitution is the platform on which a democratic country stands and flourishes, the minister recounted that earlier, the day was observed as Law Day in commemoration of the day the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution in 1949.Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed the observance into Constitution Day at the foundation laying ceremony of a statue of Dr BR Ambedkar in Mumbai on October 11, 2015.Consequently, ministry of social justice and empowerment issued an official notification on November 19 of the same year in this regard, he said.
While opining that most of the citizens care about their rights but often ignore their duties and responsibilities, the minister stressed that apart from enjoying the rights, one also needs to carry out his/her duties and responsibilities as enshrined in the Constitution, and make their contribution in the process of bringing peace, development and unity in the country.
The minister also led the participants in taking pledge to uphold the Constitution of the country at the event.
Advocate general Lenin Singh Hijam, law commissioner Ningshitombi Athokpam, prosecution director A Nilachandra, High Court of Manipur advocate RK Umakanta, All Manipur Bar Association president advocate P Tomcha Meetei, All Manipur Lady Advocate's Association president advocate Ch Kiranbala and many others also attended the event.
On the other hand, chief secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar administered the pledge of upholding Constitution among the employees of state government in a function held at the conference hall of old secretariat building.
Senior officials of different departments and secretariat staff attended the programme.
High Court of Manipur in association with Bar Council of Manipur, High Court Bar Association of Manipur, All Manipur Bar Association, Manipur State Legal Services Authority; High Court Legal Services Committee and Manipur Judicial Academy also organised the Constitution Day observance at the auditorium of the High Court.
Manipur Judicial Academy director, Kh Nobin Singh, High Court Bar Association of Manipur president Ibotombi Namoijam, and All Manipur Bar Association vice-president Nambam Manikanta Singh attended the event as presidium members.
Lawyers, who have been in practice for over 40 years, were honoured by presenting certificates of appreciation.
