Imphal, November 26 2022:
At least seven greylag geese migrating from Siberia and other countries have reportedly been sighted at Tangjeng Lake in Kakching district.
Speaking to media persons today, Honorary Wildlife Warden of Thoubal Forest Division (Kakching Range) Moirangthem Open Meitei said that the count of the bird species roosting at the lake has declined considerably as compared to 2017 .
He said that altogether 22 greylag geese took temporary shelter at the lake in January 2017 .
Saying that the bird species might have been hunted in other places as a lesser number of greylag geese arrived at the lake this winter, M Oken maintained that Nganu Thangong which used to arrive at the lake hasn't been sighted this year.
Environmentalist Dr Kh Shamungou said that geese usually migrate to Manipur in flock in between December and January.
He opined that non arrival of Nganu Thangong, however, may be due to the change in the structure of the lake.
The environmentalist appealed to the people not to hunt or poison the migratory bird so that they could continue their travel safe and sound.
This reporter also sighted the greylag geese at the lake.
It may be mentioned that 12 migratory birds were found dead at the Loktak Lake yesterday.
