Student bodies demand MM in UPSC exams

Six student bodies have exerted pressure on the state government for taking up necessary steps to replace Bengali script with Meetei Mayek (MM) for Manipuri subject in competitive examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) .
In a joint statement, the student bodies said that delay in replacing the script for Manipuri subject in the UPSC examination has affected the career of several UPSC aspirants.
The subject is a main advantage for the people of the state and failure on the part of the government to do the needful steps is ruining opportunities for the youth of the state.
Representatives of the bodies had met the education minister as well as the director of DLPI in this regard and requested them to take up necessary steps.
However, no measures have been taken up till date even after two years of amending the Manipur Official Language Act, the' joint statement lamented, while terming it as an irresponsible act on the part of the government.
The student bodies also expressed serious concern over the lack of reading materials and reference books in Meetei Mayek, and demanded the government to form transUteration committee for early transliteration of reading materials and reference books.
It also reiterated their demand for establishment of a language commission in the state.
