Thoubal, December 15 2022:
With an aim to reduce the problem of water scarcity in Charangpat area, funds from MLA local Area Development, National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), public health engineering department (PHED) and water resources would be utilised in dredging the Arong River.
A decision to this effect was arrived at after a threadbare discussion at Charangpat which was attended by MLA K Meghachandra, Thoubal DC A Subash Singh, officials of Lilong CD block BDO, PHED, water resources, clubs and organisations of Charangpat area on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters in this regard, MLA Meghachandra informed that despite existence of three water supply schemes Charangpat Mamang, Mayai and Maning Leikai, people of this area have been facing shortage of potable water for the last many years.
This is due to the fact that there is no source of water to feed the three water supply schemes except the Arong River.
However, due to poor condition of the Arong River, it is unable to regularly supply water.
Therefore, considering the problems faced by the people of Charangpat area, the meeting was convened and resolutions adopted to dredge the Arong River.
"As of now we have around Rs 25 lakh with the water resource department for the purpose.
But since the amount is too less for dredging of around 3.8 km long stretch, it has been decided that funds from MLA local area development fund, MGNREGA, water resource and PHED would be shared and take up the dredging work of the river and complete the same within 2 months", he said, while adding that check dams would also be constructed in the vicinity of the three water supply schemes.
The MLA also appealed to the people to stop encroachment along the river bank in the interest of the society.
