1.5 kg Brown sugar seized, peddlers escape

Imphal, March 25 2023:
Troops of 5 Assam Rifles recovered 37 soap cases of brown sugar weighing 1.536 kg and worth around Rs 30,720,000 in the inter national market from near border pillar 76 on Friday.
However, the peddlers escaped taking advantage of the porous border and darkness.
According to sources, surveillance cum mobile vehicle check post was established by operational team of 5 AR in general area of Hallanphai near border pillar 76 from around 7 pm Friday.
At about 7.30 pm, the surveillance team noticed movement of vehicle coming from Myanmar side.
As a Kenbo vehicle moved into Indian territory, the team signalled to halt.
However, the Kenbo riders immediately turned back with the intention to flee.
The team pursued them till border and after rigorous chase, the pillion rider dropped a black polythene and escaped.
On search of polythene, it was found containing 37 soap cases containing brown sugar.
The recovered items have been handed over to Moreh Police Station for necessary legal action.
Meanwhile, Sajik Tampak Battalion Assam Rifles of Inspector General Assam Rilles (South) provided prophylactic assistance for destruction of poppy cultivation in general area Thingbojao hills under Chakpikarong sub division on Friday.
In a release, PRO IGAR (S) informed that under the theme "War Against Drugs", a joint team of Chandel district police, Manipur Rifles and Assam Rilles (Sajik Tampak Battalion) destroyed poppy cultivation over an area of approximately 47 acres in general area Thingbojao hills under Chakpikarong sub division.
About 58 huts in the poppy fields were also burnt down.
