Imphal, March 25 2023:
Lashing out at BJP over disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the membership of Lok Sabha, Congress party has said that BJP is trying to abolish democracy to bring dictatorship in the country.
Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhawan here on Saturday, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president MLA K Meghachandra termed the disqualification order issued against Rahul Gandhi by Parliament Secretariat, a day after his conviction in a defamation case by a lower court in Surat as unreasonable.
It is against the rules for the Parliament Secretariat to disqualify him without observing formalities and consulting Election Commission.
It was a deliberate act by the BJP government against the opposition, he said.
The Congress leader further said that the speech made by Rahul Gandhi was not directed against the whole Modi surname but towards two or three individuals with same surname.
He mentioned Lalit Modi, Nirav Modi and Narendra Modi in his speech.
Lalit Modi is a person, who swindled Rs 14,000 crore from Punjab National Bank and Nirav Modi looted Rs 11,400 from Indian Overseas Bank.
Both of them are close to Narendra Modi and the BJP government has not taken up any action against the two till date, he said.
None of the three individuals mentioned by Rahul Gandhi in his speech hied the lawsuit.
The petitioner was another person and it shows the strategy of BJP to discredit the Congress leader.
BJP is ruling on the principle of supporting wrongdoers and sending truth seekers into jail, he said.
The MLA also accused the BJP government of attempting to replace secularism with capitalism in the Preamble of the Constitution of India.
Congress party will continue to fight for protecting democracy against those looting public money.
The party will also fight the conviction by following legal process, he said, while reiterating the stand declared by Rahul Gandhi during a press conference earlier.
