Imphal, March 25 2023:
All Manipur Nupi Marup celebrated the International Women's Day at Irabot Bhavan, BT Road, here, on Saturday.
The observance was attended by All Manipur Nupi Marup patron member M Kadambini, president M Sakhi Devi and ex-president S Sorojini as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Nupi Marup general secretary L Sumatibala pointed out that while other countries observed Women's Day with joy, India including Manipur observed the day discussing various issues gripping the society and country.
She then remarked that forests are disappearing from the state at an alarming rate.
Despite repeated requests not to ignite bushfires or cut down trees, no action seems to be taken up till date as if the hill areas are out of the purview of the government.
This can be seen from the rise of prices of water tankers in the valley, which was once dependent on the streams flowing down from the hills but have now all dried up.
She then said that the incompetency of the previous governments led to the misunderstandings between the hills and the valley.
The current chief minister has made numerous statements about the people's welfare but the situation faced by the people in reality is vastly different.
All of these have become a burden on the shoulders of women.
Thus, there is the need to rectify the existing systems, she contended, while mentioning the prolonged non-deposit of gas subsidies in the bank accounts of beneficiaries.
She also remarked that the time to discuss and comment on the way the public are being manipulated had passed long ago.
