JD (U) opts to support BJP

The Janata Dal (United) has resolved to support the BJP in the formation of a new Government in the State.
In a statement, the JD (U) appealed to the BJP to honour the mandate given to the party and fulfil the hope and aspiration of the people.
"In the interest of the people of Manipur, the JD (U) has decided to give support to the BJP in the forma- tion of the government.
"The JD (U) would like to appeal to the BJP to honour the mandate reposed in the party and fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people," it said.
Meanwhile, the JD (U) has elected MLA elect (Thameiband AC) Khu-mukcham Joykisan Singh and MLA elect (Tipaimukh AC) Ngursanglur Sanate as the leader and deputy leader of its the party's Legislature wing respectively while Abdul Nasir who won the Lilong seat has been appointed as its chief whip.

JD (U) won six seats in the 12th State Assembly election - Thangmeiband AC (Kh Joykisan), Wang-khei AC (Th Arunkumar), Lilong AC (Abdul Nasir), Jiribam AC (Asab Uddin), Tipaimukh AC (Ngur-sanglur Sanate) and Churachandpur AC (LM Khaute) .
In the recently held Assembly elections, the BJP retained power by winning 32 seats in the 60-member House while NPP emerged as the second single largest party as the party bagged seven seats.
The Congress, which won the maximum seats in the previous Assembly election (28), gave a very poor performance this time as some of its top candidates were dethroned by rival parties/candidates and emerged victorious in only 5 ACs.
